In the Garden

This girl is tired tonight! I spent the day at my parents in their garden. This is part of the harvest from today.
Pictured is 13.5 gallons of beans ready for the canner. After I snapped this picture another row was picked and we ended up with another 4 gallons.

Once I was home I went out to tend my garden. This is what I was able to harvest this evening.
A little over 8 lbs of zucchini.
There are some cucumbers almost ready and tons of blooms. It is crazy how well things are doing.  Last year I planted 6 cucumber plants and only got a handful and this year I planted 4 plants and they are going wild.  I am hopeful that I will get enough for some pickle relish.
If you I don't make it back here this week you will know I am busy in the garden and kitchen.

May your day be filled with joy and contentment!

  1. That is a lot of beans! Mine are just starting to climb the support trellises but I am already seeing some blossoms. I love fresh beans and I really am hoping to can some this year also.

  4. Those beans look wonderful! Our beans were bunny food this year and our zucchini and cucumber plants didn't do well. But our friends' garden has flourished and they've brought us more produce than we can use! So it all worked out! We do have some delicious tomatoes from the garden now so at least something is doing well!;-)

  7. Such beautiful abundance. Yummy green beans. I have always loved zuchinni, Tomatoes and zuchinni are the taste of summer. I was so hungry for fried zuchinni the other day. I bought two small ones at the store and fried them. Apparently one of the zuchinnis had a major problem. It was as bitter tasting as poison. The other one was perfect. The first two slices I had must have been from the good one, and then I ate a slice of the bitter one and couldn't believe it, so I actually took the risk and bit into another one, yuck. I tasted another one and it was the good one and was delicious. Even though I hated to throw the whole batch away, I couldn't stand the thought of biting into one of the horrible one again. I smelled the various slices and there was no detectable odor that was different in any of the slices. I am glad I didn't eat or taste anymore of them because I looked it up online and discovered that the bitter ones can make a person sick. It is a condition that happens because of hot dry stress causing weather, or sometimes the plants revert back to some bitter tasting ancestors. I'm sure I'll get my appetite for squash back again, but maybe not too soon. I hope all of yours will be delicious.

I just read Megan's Adoption Story. Teared up (happy tears) while reading, as memories of the time when we were waiting, and then their arrival, came to mind. My kids are from South Korea. Even though I still call them "kids", my daughter is 33 and son is 30. Daughter was 4 months old and son 3 months when they arrived. Oh the years fly by faster and faster. Enjoy every day with Megan (I know you do). Sometimes I miss my kids as they were when they were babies/ kids. Our son is in the Air Force and lives overseas, so we don't get to see him very often. Hopefully we will this month. Our daughter and her husband live nearby, so we get to see them and our 6 year old grandson pretty often. Thank you for your Megan's Adoption Story blog. If you would like to see pics of my "kids" take a look at my blog, Persimmon Moon Cottage.
