Baking Bread

There is something relaxing, almost therapeutic about making bread.

I have made it in bread makers and I have also used my Kitchen Aide mixer to mix up the dough.

(french bread to go with a spaghetti & meatball supper)

Honestly I find that doing it the old fashioned way, the way my grandmother, great-grandmother and those before her made it, gives me the most pleasure.

What about you? Are you a bread maker? Do you do it the old fashioned way? I hope you are taking time to enjoy the simple moments!

  1. Mmmm - I made French Bread yesterday! I do make pretty much all of our bread (not hamburger buns) and find myself doing so once or twice a week. I always mix it in my Kitchen Aid for time's sake - but recently did it by hand at my mom's - it was kinda fun!

  2. I love making bread! I love my Bosch mixer for large batches of bread but prefer mixing smaller batches like French bread, dinner rolls, pitas, and pizza crust by hand.

I first started mixing and kneading some by hand when I taught someone who didn't have a mixer how to make bread. It's nice to know how to do it both ways!

I never used my bread machine so I gave it to my sister and she has used it several times a week for over a year now. She loves it; I believe she generally uses it for mixing and then shapes the dough and bakes it in her oven.

Your French bread loaves are beautiful!

  5. I make bread the lazy way. I love my bread machine. I make bread in it every week. Also make pizza dough in it and honey-wheat dough for hamburger buns. It is so easy to make them. You let the machine do the mixing, and first rising, then roll out the dough and cut out the hamburger buns with a biscuit cutter, cover and let rise again before baking. So much better than store-bought.

  6. I Just made three loaves of sour dough bread - I love baking bread!

I don't own a stand mixer or a bread machine, so I don't know any other way to make it than the old fashioned way!

It's a great workout for the arms, that's for sure!

  7. I LOVE to make bread! It's kind of the family joke now b/c I used to be a HORRIBLE bread maker when we first got married...you know, hockey puck biscuits, etc. :) I was determined to learn, though. I have used a machine and my kitchen aid over the years, but have come to love making it by hand, too. I use the More with Less cookbook b/c their recipes have great taste and make a lot. I like to have some to freeze (if I can keep everyone from snitching when they come out of the oven!). I recently tried making bagels for the first time and I am hooked. They are extra work, but oh so good! A hot, fresh bagel with cream cheese just can't be beat!

  8. Yep, I love the old fashioned way. I may use the bread machine if I'm feeling lazy for pizza dough. I like the Kitchen Aid but I finish off my dough all hands on!

  9. Looks positively yummy! I have made bread both in the bread maker (which since has worn itself out), but now I mostly make it by hand. I have a mixer and have never used it to make bread ~ think I will try that out!
