Labeling Leftovers

While browsing the latest issue of Parents Magazine I saw a tip for labeling food containers. It suggested using a dry erase maker. It works wonderful and wipes right off.

I hate to admit this but there was quite a bit of food waste before I started doing this. I would have to guess low long that half can of peaches had been in the refrigerator. When I wasn't sure I played it better safe then sorry and tossed the items. No more guessing and when I clean out the frig on Thursday's I know exactly what items need tossed. It certainly works for me!

  1. What a simple tip. Thanks Wendi. I have several dry erase markers around the house.

  2. This is a great idea. We always end up wasting food, and I always feel so guilty about it.

  3. Brilliant! I just went and moved a dry erase to the drawer next to my fridge. I know how you feel about wasting food. It drives me crazy too. I keep a sharpie in that same drawer and write on lids of salad dressings, mayo, etc. so I can remember the date they were opened. Items like that, which don't get used every day, can be dangerous if left opened for too long and I always fret about how long they have been in there.

  4. great idea. i wonder if dry erase markers would also work on glass bowls, as that is what I mainly use to store leftovers. I'm going to try it.

  5. Great idea! My hubby will be happy to have less waste. I am so bad about remembering (or shall we say "forgetting") when I put stuff in the fridge and I'm like you about playing it safe...sigh. Can't wait to try this tip! Also, I loved your lilacs pic. It brought back childhood memories, as we had 4 big lilac bushes down the side of our long driveway when I was little.

  7. What a cool idea..I usually remember but better to not take a chance. I have a pen like that and use it on my dry reaser board that hangs on the fridge and now I can use it for my leftovers and also when I put food in freezer from the garden
Thanks for sharing that great tip
