Recycle

We have recently started to recycle. I know, about time! I am currently keeping my recycle items in a trash can next to my washer. Definitely not pretty! I am curious how the rest of you store your recycle items. I am hopeful that some of you have ideas that are a little more pleasing on the eyes. Thanks!

  1. First off, great job on recycling! I don't have a beautiful solution- I keep mine in a small covered trashcan next to the larger trashcan in the kitchen. Each day I empty it into the provided recycling bin from the city, which I keep on the deck. I have seen old-fashioned metal containers with the word-recycle on it, which might be something you could make. Even a lined basket might be nice!

The best thing to do is throw your recyclables into your neighbor's yard. That is the neatest solution I came up with!

  3. I can't help but laugh at that anonymous comment. We have a big storage container (you know the plastic tupperware kind) that we keep in our garage. Then I have a small can that I keep next to our regular garbage for recycling that I dump into the larger one whenever it's full. I found I recycle SOOO much more having the two cans side by side.

  4. My solution isn't pretty, either. I only recycle aluminum cans since there isn't a place around here to recycle other stuff and our county DOES NOT recycle. I keep a smaller, open, garbage bag lined trash can in front of my regular kitchen can. Once it is full of cans, I close up the bag and put it in the garage until I have a bunch to take to the recycling place.

  5. I put mind in a trash bay outside and a local man picks them up to recycle for a charity. Mary

  6. My solution isn't pretty either - we use a trashcan under the sink in our kitchen. We don't have a local service that will pick it up, so my husband takes it to the dump once a week. Great job on recycling!

  7. I used to have stacking recycle bins, they were yellow, blue and green, different sizes and they opened more like an old fashioned candy bin. They stacked so you could put them in a garage, deck, where ever you keep your garbage. You could seperate paper, plastic, and metal...I don't have them now but they were carried by Wal-Mart. If I can I will find a picture and post it on my blog...

Here is a couple of sites to give you the idea...I have also seen people use baskets with plastic bag liners...

  9. Ikea has these great bins that you can use to separate your garbage: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90076364

We have friends that use these, and have labeled each of their three bins.

Since we live overseas, recycling is a part of everyday life. We recycle plastic, metal, paper, colored and clear glass, and juice cartons from the normal garbage.

Of course, this means finding a place for it all in an apartment as well! :)

  10. Wendi,

Good job for starting to recycle!

Our storage isn't pretty, but it's in our unfinished basement: we use a paper grocery sack for newspaper, and an old laundry basket for plastic and aluminum.
